What to expect from an at home newborn session
Sessions can take place at your home or mine
Newborn sessions are truly amazing. I like to try and photograph in those very early days so we capture those ten tiny fingers and those tiny toes that you've waited nine long months (or maybe longer) to hold. There is something truly magical about this time in your life. Despite the sleepless nights, the cluster feeds, the chaos if you're welcoming a new baby into an already toddler or child filled home, the oxytocin, happiness and love that is in the air is quite amazing and I love experiencing that. It is truly a privilege to be asked to do a newborn session, and it's not a job I take lightly.
I am a mum to two beautiful children, but I remember those early days VERY well. The last thing I felt like doing when I had had a baby and was trying to balance feeding demands, sleep needs and then balancing life with a toddler, was to put a face full of make up on, take four million outfit changes to a location I had never been to before and pose for a photograph. So, I offer these sessions so that you are the most relaxed you can be with a photographer around.
- The session takes place at your home or mine. I have plenty of space at my home, which I will welcome you into! It's entirely your choice. And there is always PLENTY of coffee or tea as I drink it by the bucketful!
- I benchmark 1.5-2 hours but can be flexible to accommodate feeding, changing (sometimes bathing!) and playing with your toddler/other children too so they are included in the shoot.
- I like to use as much natural light as possible, so let me know what spaces are light and airy in your home so that we have a couple of places to use during the shoot. And please don't worry about your house being a mess. This a common concern that lots of people have when booking, and I will truly work with your space in the best way I can, so you don't need to stress. All I need is two clear spaces, and the rest can stay as it is!
- I do have some props such as a vintage rattan moses basket that I bring with me, as this is a beautiful place to photograph a baby in - it's also super comfortable! If you have a couple of outfits to hand, you can change your baby halfway through, or use different blankets, swaddles or muslins, to give variety.
- I won't manipulate your baby into certain poses - that isn't my style of photography, so I will photograph your baby as they are naturally sleeping or feeding (the second is your choice).
Incorporating siblings into the session
It is incredibly important to me that if siblings want to be a part of the session, they are treated in exactly the same way as a newborn. In fact, they have big sister or big brother status and so, they are the most important! When my daughter my was born, my son was three and he took his role as big brother quite seriously. There were times he wanted nothing more than to snuggle and to hold her and he loved having his photo taken with her, but there were other times where Paw Patrol and playing with Chase or Rubble was far more important. Whatever is important in their little world on the day of the shoot, I go with the flow. If they want to be photographed holding their sibling, playing with their sibling or sitting with mummy or daddy then that works really well. If they want to be photographed watching TV or playing with their toys, that works equally as well because we achieve some shots of them as they are. If they don't wish to have any part of it, that's also just fine! There will always be future opportunities to have sibling shots.
A relaxed, happy and content child is more important to me, than asking them to do something they don't want to do. I currently have a very strong willed and sassy three year old who negotiates hard on lots of things she doesn't want to do. As a parent, you pick your battles. On the day of the shoot therefore, we'll take it as it comes! Welcoming a new baby into the family is a big deal for everyone and things calm down a little as time moves on and so, if they don't want to be part of the session, we'll look at booking you in for a future date when we can achieve some sibling shots. The most important thing is to not stress, mama!
