Family Portrait Session - December 2024


I had the pleasure of photographing the Duke family on the 27th December and what a cold, misty and magical day it was. I was so very happy to accommodate this session date even though it was just after Christmas because family members had travelled to be together and it was essential they were all included. I will always make time to accommodate your date if I can.


They chose Northycote Farm as the location, and it provided a stunning backdrop with plenty of scenic spots for us to choose from. Even though it was cold, we kept the children moving and entertained with some jumping shots, running shots, hide and seek shots and marshmallow toasting so when we did ask them to pose, they were brilliant and did just that!


This shoot reminded me why I love shooting outdoors. I love natural backdrops and the excitement of a new location and the variety this gives to a shoot. Whilst the British weather can be challenging at times, I will always go ahead with a shoot if it is dry, or only light rain forecast as we can usually work around this. You'll see from the Gallery below, that the mist and frost added a stillness and calmness to the shoot and was extremely atmospheric which translated into many of the shots.


Whenever I am shooting a large family group, I always plan for kids needing to be kids and so I am happy for them to play, explore and get dirty! The more relaxed, happy and entertained they are, the better the photographs. I am a mum, so I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to keep them engaged. Ultimately this is an experience you have paid for, and so it is extremely important to me that everyone is relaxed and happy so they can enjoy the experience and enjoy spending time together. Those are where the real and precious memories are made.


We planned the shoot beforehand, and I always request a shot list from you so I can ensure that all of the shots you want to achieve are achieved. I'll also discuss the types of set ups I am thinking about doing on the day and ask you to forward any ideas you have so we can collaborate. I usually do this via Pinterest and then we just take the shoot as it comes. It was essential for this family for instance, that Grandma was included with the children in the majority of the set ups as well as individual family shots. I therefore ensured that we got plenty of photographs with Grandma included (both natural and posed) and the different family groups, that I know will be treasured for a lifetime.


You'll also see from the Gallery, that as a photographer, you appreciate the moments that happen in between taking the formal shots and you NEVER stop shooting. Some of those shots- the candid shots where people don't realise they are being photographed- prove to be the most magical. A conversation, a laugh, a joke, playtime, climbing trees. Those are real moments that deserve to be captured as they show the true essence of your connection and love as a family. So when I shoot, I never put the camera down because I don't want to miss a single shot. And you never know, those shots may well become your favourite.


This shoot took place outside of Warwickshire and I am always happy to consider requests to travel. This family also wanted more shots included in their Client Gallery which meant the package was bespoke to cover both my travel expenses and the additional processing time. I am always more than happy to accommodate your request if I can.
